Standard Procedure (Objectives)#

The four main steps for std-doi publication at the WDC-Climate are:

  • Permission
  • SQA - Scientific Quality Assurance
  • TQA - Technical Quality Assurance
  • Publication

Permission#

The std-doi publication process requires several general organizational and technical pre-conditions
  • long-term availability of published data in online repository (WDC-Climate)
  • long-term availability of metadata in online repository (WDC-Climate)
  • open access to primary data and metadata
  • published data entities are fixed and no change is possible after std-doi publication
  • metadata of citation, data format(s) and datasize are fixed

The permission process is not a standard process because every online repository has an individual access system. At WDC-Climate the investigator of the experiment ist permitted to initiate the std-doi publication process.

SQA - Scientific Quality Assurance#

The Scientific Quality Control is done by the author(s) and the data are approved by author(s). Actually no standard process exists for Scientific Quality Assurance. The description of quality checks and corresponding protocol files should be integrated into the online repository. For standardization of quality control a SQA toolbox with examples should be developed.

TQA - Technical Quality Assurance#

Technical Quality Control of data are developed and implemented at WDC-Climate for the std-doi publication. The check list and corresponding procedures are used for simulation data and are presently expanded to measurement:
  1. Number of data sets is correct and not equal 0
  2. Size of every data set is not equal 0
  3. The data sets and corresponding metadata are all accessable via internet
  4. The data size is controlled and correct
  5. The time description (metadata) and existency of data are consistent, complete, start-, stop- date are consistent, continuous time steps are correct
  6. The format is correct
  7. Variable description and data are consistent

Publication#

After quality control of data and metadata by the authors and the WDC-Climate the main steps for std-doi data publication at the WDC-Climate are:
  1. Creation of std-doi metadata (metadata for publicatin of electronic media according to ISO 690-2) The detailed definition of the std-doi metadata profile can be obtained from http://dc110dmz.gfz-potsdam.de/contenido/std-doi/upload/pdf/STD_metadata_kernel_v3.pdf and the corresponding xsd definition is located at http://www.tib.uni-hannover.de/doi/std-doi.xsd.
  2. Creation of persistent identifiers (DOI/URN)
  3. std-doi metadata integration into library catalogue (TIBORDER)
  4. Link and access via internet to primary data and metadata at the WDC-Climate archive level by integration of the persistent identifiers (DOI/URN) into the resolver sytems by the Registration Agency (TIB - German National Library of Science and Technology).
We expect to use the existing std-doi publication service developed and implemented at WDC-Climate and TIB (http://www.std-doi.de)
